Platform Engineer · Enterprise Infrastructure & AI Platforms · Des Moines, IA

Infrastructure nobody has to think about.

That's the whole job: image pipelines instead of manual builds, orchestration instead of ticket queues, identity instead of one-off access requests. Today the work is agent systems and developer tooling — same discipline, better tools.

Profile

My whole career has been one problem, stated four different ways: this is being done by hand, and it shouldn't be.

That started with servers, storage, and networks, and became virtualization and VDI at enterprise scale — Omnissa/VMware Horizon, App Volumes, DEM, FSLogix, and the PowerCLI and REST automation that made them repeatable instead of artisanal. It became identity and cloud: Azure, Entra ID, Intune, Zero Trust. Along the way I founded two businesses, ran the complete IT function for a manufacturer as its only technology leader, and delivered engineering for regional banks, insurers, telecoms, and global datacenter operations.

Since 2025 the work has been AI platform engineering — a desktop agent development environment I use daily, a terminal coding agent in Go, a self-hosted runtime for autonomous workers, MCP clients and servers, sandboxed tool runtimes and permission engines. Not experiments. Software with test suites, audit logs, and failure modes I've thought about.

This isn't a career change. Agent systems are what enterprise automation looks like now, and twenty years of being responsible for systems where an outage had a dollar figure attached is exactly the background that makes them safe to run.

What I deliver

A

Platform & Automation

Turning manual operations into platforms: PowerShell and PowerCLI at scale, REST-driven workflows, image and provisioning pipelines, and the standardization that makes a fragile process repeatable.

B

Infrastructure & Cloud

Microsoft Azure and AWS, VMware/Omnissa virtualization, vSphere and ESXi, Windows Server and Active Directory, Microsoft 365 — including tenant-to-tenant migrations executed without disruption.

C

AI Platform Engineering

Agent runtimes, MCP clients and servers, multi-provider LLM orchestration, sandboxed tool execution, and permission engines — production software, not prototypes. Built with Claude Code and Codex, daily.

D

Identity & Zero Trust

Entra ID and hybrid join, Intune, Conditional Access, MFA, network segmentation, and gateway hardening — access designed as an operating posture, not an audit checkbox.

E

Resilience & Operations

Disaster recovery and business continuity, enterprise backup with Veeam and CommVault, storage strategy, observability, and the on-call reality of keeping it all running.

F

Consulting & Delivery

Requirements gathering, solution architecture, implementation, and production support — owning the client relationship end to end across finance, insurance, telecom, manufacturing, and SMB.

Signature work

Sole IT leader · Manufacturing

The whole IT function, owned end to end

Director of Information Technology
Performance Display & Millwork

Accountable for strategy, budget, vendors, and execution across every system the company ran — as the only technology leader in the building.

  • Architected and built a new network from the ground up: fiber between buildings, a new server room and rack, switching, firewall, and full internal infrastructure.
  • Led a complete modernization — vSphere across three ESXi hosts, ERP stand-up, and an Active Directory redesign from scratch.
  • Executed two enterprise email migrations with zero business disruption (Exchange → Microsoft 365, then tenant-to-tenant).
  • Owned IT budget planning and forecasting, balancing capital investment against operational need.
Enterprise EUC · Automation

Making gold images boring

Senior Solutions Engineer / Architect
Skaletek Solutions

Architected Omnissa Horizon environments for distributed workforces where downtime directly stops the business — and replaced the hand-built parts of them.

  • Standardized the gold-image pipeline into a scripted, repeatable recompose workflow, so failures stopped being a weekly firefight with a different root cause each time.
  • Automated image lifecycle and agent patching via PowerCLI and REST APIs, replacing a manual per-image process.
  • Designed Horizon 8 with App Volumes 4.x and DEM for elastic scaling across a distributed workforce.
  • Integrated Entra ID, Intune, and Duo MFA for zero-trust access and hybrid identity compliance.

Agent infrastructure, built to run unattended

Independent · 2025 – present
packetloss404

A portfolio of production-minded AI platform software — the same automation instinct, applied to agents. Seventy-nine repositories, code-verified.

  • PacketADE — a Tauri v2 desktop agent development environment unifying seven coding-agent providers behind one event contract, with a symlink-jailed tool runtime. My daily driver.
  • PacketAgent — a self-hosted runtime for autonomous workers: checkpointed, budget-capped, network-isolated, with effect receipts so a retry never fires twice. 1,642 tests.
  • packetcode — a single-binary Go coding agent with hand-rolled provider clients, an allow/ask/deny permission engine, and git-worktree isolation.
  • Vellum — selected for Anthropic's Built with Opus 4.7 program: one of 500 invited from over 20,000 applicants.
Founder · Consulting

A practice built from zero

Founder & Principal Consultant
IANLAN LLC

Built and ran an independent consulting practice serving SMB clients end to end — sales, scoping, delivery, and the client relationship.

  • Generated $375K+ in revenue over the life of the practice.
  • Delivered IT strategy, licensing consultation, disaster-recovery planning, and infrastructure modernization for organizations without internal IT leadership.
  • Built repeatable automation templates for imaging, deployment, and backup verification — reducing delivery time and cost on every engagement.
P&L ownership · Early leadership

Business leadership, proven early

Chief Executive Officer
Higher Level LLC · 2006–2013

Founded and ran a two-division business — IT consulting plus a brick-and-mortar repair operation — years before "founder" was a résumé keyword.

  • Managed staff, service contracts, and SLAs across both divisions.
  • Ran infrastructure rollouts for 20+ small-business clients.
  • Seven years of direct P&L ownership — the business judgment behind every technology decision since.
